TPE Web 4.8 Beta 5

A bit of a monster update, this one. Here are the headlines.

New Outline-mode First Person View in 3D

This is available FREE for all users and is now the default view when you first navigate to the 3D page. It provides a first-person view of terrain and buildings :

As part of this change, low quality terrain setting has been retired, and all users have access to medium quality.

Terrain mode is now named “Shaded”

If you’re considering upgrading from Free/Supporter to PRO or MAX, there’s now a clear comparison of what each plan provides in terms of the 3D capability:

Click on the comparison link to view this – the sliders are interactive to allow you to understand the differences visually.

Enhanced Buildings are now included for PRO subscribers

Previously, these required MAX, but with the addition of Photorealistic 3D to MAX, we’ve extended enhanced buildings access to PRO users:

Other Changes in 3D

  • The Orbit vs FPV control now lives at the bottom left
  • The red light night mode can now be disabled using the lighting control top right
  • When Milky “markers” (the spheres) are off, the Galactic Center is now indicated clearly
  • Planets are now shown at the correct scale, and, along with other celestial targets, are circled rather than represented by not-to-scale “dots”

I’d be grateful for all feedback on the changes. The next beta update will be similarly substantial!

TPE Web 4.8 Beta 6

Quite a few more changes in this drop – here’s a quick summary:

Presets

You can now define Presets.

A preset is a way of saving the current app setup, i.e. which page you’re on, how it is configured, e.g. which map type is selected, what tools are enabled, e.g. field-of-view with a specific camera and lens, which bodies/targets are selected.

You can save a Preset in the newly enhanced Search popup – more on that below. Click search, or press Cmd+K , then add the new Preset:

Once you have more than one saved, you can switch between them very quickly in the Search popup, or using keyboard shortcuts, Option/Alt-1, Option/Alt-2, etc.

Example use cases:

  • A topographic map selected on the map page: for exploring new landscape locations
  • An outdoor map with the Alignment tool enabled for the Moon: finding Moon shooting locations
  • The 3D first-person-view with Photorealistic 3D and FOV enabled: preview your shot composition

Presets allow you change all these things with just a single action, making them ideal for power users!

Enhanced Search Form

The search form (see above) now lets you search not only for places and coordinates, but for any of your saved resources (e.g. Shot Plans, Locations, Visual Searches).

If you want to search ONLY for saved resources, prefix the search using * key (similar to Firefox browser).

Command Palette

Additionally, the form now acts as a “command palette”. Type > to search only for available commands. Use the cursor keys to move up/down and Enter to execute the selected command:

The command palette lets you drive a lot more of TPE from the keyboard.

There are multiple other tweaks, bug fixes and refinements. Please post your feedback here.

Good evening Stephen. A question: what is the maximum range in the 3d enhanced level? Because I have an alignment with 240 Km between red and Black pin and I see the complete results only in Photorealistic, not in the other two option of visualization.

Then I remind you a couple of points in my wish list : multiple (double) targets in the visual search (e.g. moon- Venus, venus-jupiter, moon-mars, jupiter-saturn etc.) seen either as filters or combined targets … as already discussed …

Then the selection of pin positions without going back to the map automatically …

Thank you a lot

I concur 100%! I think the “heat map” that Stephen has implemented is a huge step forward in alignment photography. Will be huge for Deepscape photogs. Thanks, Stephen!

Love all the new features, is there a way to tell which Beta we’re using? When I click about it just says 4.8.0, it doesn’t say Beta 6. To make sure I’m using the latest version, I close it down and reopen it.

Hi Fabio, I’ll have to check, but it’s likely not loading quite that much terrain in Outline and Shaded modes.

For the question around applying a saved location without returning to the map, that is now in – hold the Command key when you click the pin buttons and the navigation is suppressed. This works in both the Library page and the newly updated Search/Command modal form.

(Conjunctions etc not forgotten, but that will be a while away yet.)

Hi Ron – not specifically, but if you reload the page after I announce an update, you should have it automatically. If you can’t see the new features from the post, then try another reload.

THanks a lot Stephen; I’ll patient for sure for the rest. Due to the demanding loading time of the photorealistic section, I hope, due to the now more powerful planning potentialities (e.g. double landmark), that loading distance will be extended in outline and shaded terrain.

Sorry for bothering you again and I apologize if what I am going to ask is already implemented. I often come out with a planification without going through the visual search (e.g. now with the alignment section). Having both pins on and timing set, is it possible to save the shooting plan directly from any of the 3d visualizations. Otherwise I have to activate a search for something I already found. Thank you. Best.

Hi Fabio,

You can create a new shot plan at any time using the button below the timeline, as shown:

This works from either the map page or the 3D page.

Hi Fabio – I’ll see what’s possible. In the meantime, Photorealistic 3D loads quite a lot faster on the Performance or Balanced setting than it does on High. Might be worth a try, if you currently have it set to High.

I seem to have the same issue / no matter where I go to download the Web version I get 4.8.0 (use a bookmark)…even with a page refresh there is no update. Also the TPE main page redirects to 4.7 - not sure what to do to get the latest beta…very happy with 4.8.0 but some cool new things to play with up to bet .6!

Hi @FuzzyLens,

4.7 is on app.photoephemeris.com or next.photoephemeris.com
4.8 is on beta.photoephemeris.com.

However, I’m going to be releasing 4.8 in the next few hours, after which all sites will show 4.8 on reload.

Let me know if that helps!

Stephen

4.8 was just released. There’s a full What’s New article to go with it, which you should see popup when you reload the site.

Hi @fabiofoto – a question for you: for your 240km range shot plan, what elevation is the red pin at? I’m working on extending the range at the moment, and an elevation-based model is likely the best approach. Thanks! Stephen
