We’ve been in the UK for the past two months dealing with a family illness and bereavement (hence the lack of recent posts).
One of the upsides has been getting to spend a little time on the Northumberland coast, one of the most photogenic you’ll find. This week, we’re staying in Alnmouth, around 40 minutes drive north of Newcastle.
Our place has a balcony with spectacular views over the north sea and today provided an equally spectacular sunrise:
The east coast mainline railway runs through this shot - you can see a car heading north (nearest) and a train heading south (behind) in the lower right of the scene.
We’ll be getting home later next week, and getting back to normal. More soon.
Northumberland: I thought that was a made-up name in Vikings! Sorry you are going thru tough times. Enjoy your time with family!. The scenery looks amazing!
That’s the area where the BBC crime series “Vera” is shot. It’s a great series (on BritBox), and the scenery is as much a character as any of the people–spectacular and austere. Northumberland is on my list of must-visits. I’ve been to the south of Scotland on the west side, now it’s time for the east.
@BillP - exactly so! Also “Inspector George Gently” (which I think is a better show). I grew up in Newcastle – long enough ago that it was still part of Northumberland – so it’s almost home turf.
Oh, the way George Gently ended is still burned in my brain. Awesome series (even if his irritating assistant was a bit overplayed).
I had assumed you were from the US. Sorry about the confusion. I have long followed a landscape photographer from that area–Thomas Heaton–and I was surprised when I saw locations he had shot popping up in Vera (particularly a coffee shop/ice cream parlor in Whitley Bay and other attractions along that coast).
I hope to get up there and to the Cairngorms, Kinlochleven, and Glencoe late this summer.
Thanks for your work on Photoephemeris (and the new updates). I don’t get to do astrophotography much, living in Center City Philadelphia, but when I take my annual trips to Cherry Springs State Park and/or the Adirondacks, it comes in handy.
Yup. That’s exactly it! And I see the dome of the arcade in the distance there.
Thanks for the offer of tips on locations. I’m looking at late summer in order to have some chance of warm weather there and heather in bloom, and Philly’s going to be hopping with tourists earlier this summer, so it should be fun here.
