How to open links in TPE app?

Is there any way you can open links in the TPE app?

I’ve tried opening Photo Ephemeris links in a number of apps, and they are all opened in the web version rather than in the TPE app.

When there’s been an option to open the app from the web page, the app shows the last viewed location and not the location that the link points to.

Hi @thomaskyhn – can you tell me a bit more about exactly what steps you’re following? Where are the links you’re opening? Displayed on a web page? In an email? Are you clicking them on an iOS device with TPE installed? etc.

Please give me as much specific detail as possible and I can try to provide some options to try.

In general, a TPE link from the current web app, e.g. this link clicked on an iPhone with TPE installed should get you to London at 9AM on Christmas Day 2026.

If you’re opening links from the v4 or beta web app, they won’t open the app directly on your phone at this time.

You can also share via Airdrop from Safari on a Mac to the iPhone and those should open the app rather than Mobile Safari:

Hello @stephen

Thanks for your reply.

The links I’ve tried to open have been saved in notes (Simplenote), sent to myself on Telegram and saved in notes to saved locations on Organic Maps. They’ve all been shortened. Some of them have been generated on the v4 web version though. But I’ve also tried with (shortened) links from the v3 web version and that didn’t work either.

They all open in a browser window (internally in the app or in the default browser on the phone). (This is all on iOS 26.5.)

I just tried your London link, and that works (I tried sending it to myself on Telegram).

Could it be an issue with shortened links?

Thomas

Hello again,

I’ve done a few tests.

Here’s a screen recording which shows 1) an unsuccessful attempt to open a shortened link (saved in the old version for web) and 2) a successful attempt to open the full link – both links sent to myself in Telegram:

And here’s another screen recording of a successful attempt to open a shortened link in DevonThink:

Opening shortened links (saved in the old web version) in Apple Maps and Organic Maps also appears to work.

So it seems that what doesn’t work is opening shortened links in Telegram.

Thomas

Thanks for the test data - I’ll try to dig into this tomorrow and report back!

Hi @thomaskyhn – I found some potential bugs in the iOS app around URL handling. I have a fixed version of the v4 app on its way to TestFlight now. Can I send you a beta invite?

I couldn’t reproduce the Telegram short-link issue, but I don’t really use Telegram, so I’m sending messages to the one bot I have configured there rather than receiving them, which may not reproduce the problem exactly…

Hi @stephen

Thanks, I’d be happy to try the beta. I take it you need my email address – I’ll send it in a DM.
