Is there a comparison of Web and mobile versions?

Newbie here – I promise I did look for an FAQ or pinned topic before posting this! I just created a free TPE Web account, and I would like to upgrade that or buy the iPadOS app (or both!), but I haven’t found a webpage or Forum topic that discusses the similarities and differences between TPE on different platforms. My laptop screen isn’t that much larger than my iPad, so “more resolution” is probably only part of the difference; can someone point me to such a discussion, or reply here? Thanks!

Hi @altfuels - welcome!

Reasonable question and one that there’s probably not a great answer to right now. Partly that’s because both web app and iOS app are soon getting major overhauls (web app to v4, iOS app to v5).

The short version is this:

  • Web v4 drives more towards advance (and advanced) planning: lots of new map overlays, visualization and night-/astro- planning features

  • iOS v5 adds a lot more in–the-field tools: depth-of-field, field-of-view, night photography point stars/exposure/star trails/, camera slate

Both have lots in common still though:

  • Map + timeline views
  • Photo Gear
  • Moon Simulator
  • Saved Locations
  • Photography Weather

You can try out Web v4 at next.photoephemeris.com and if you drop me a message, I can send a TestFlight beta invite for iOS v5.

Hello – thanks for the reply! I’m not an advanced-enough user (of anything photographic, really, except ancient equipment – long story) that I would be of much use as a beta tester, but thank you for the offer. The cost is entirely reasonable for both versions, so I’ll just get both and see what use I can make of each. I very much appreciate your response!
