Gorgeous shot. Can you explain why ‘double’ occultation?
Thanks! Jupiter had just come out from behind the Moon and the Moon had just come out from behind Lick Observatory. Just trying to be clever
I like to combine planets and moon if possible. 7 JAN dim Mercury, Venus and Moon. The second picture Mars, Castor and Pollux, Moon and Venus
Hi All, I’ve been using TPE for a few years now, hardly ever go out without consulting it. Here’s a couple of Milky Way shots I did last year, planned with TPE, at Birling Gap and Bodiam Castle in East Sussex UK. Hope you like them.
Very striking image! What is the key to making one of these kinds of images where the moon looks so big? It seems like it requires a long lens, shot from a distance from the foreground element.
It seems like it requires a long lens, shot from a distance from the foreground element.
That’s exactly it. The greater the camera distance from the foreground subject, the greater the relative size of the Moon. The longer your lens, the larger you can make the subject (and Moon) in the frame.
You can get the apparent size of the Moon (or Sun) at a given distance directly from Photo Ephemeris Web.
Thanks! You and Stephen are correct. It takes a very long lens positioned far from the landscape subject. In my photo, the mountain was 4 miles from my shooting position and I used a 600mm with a 2x converter. A solid tripod and remote release is an absolute must at that focal length. My shutter was at 1/100 second @f13 and iso 400. A small aperture is needed to get the foreground and moon sharp. To help with this, I sometimes focus slightly beyond the foreground and let the depth of field render both moon and foreground sharp. I got lucky on this photo with absolutely perfect atmospheric conditions.
One of the first images planned using TPE. Total lunar eclipse Jan. 31 2018 taken at San Xavier del Bac just south of Tucson. This is a composite.

Another slovenian moon from two weeks ago. The weather conditions were very foggy, but at the end it paid off!
Love the foggy Moon! I have to ask - what is your subject drinking? A fine Slovenian Sauvignon Blanc?
Thank you very much Stephen!
Actually Miralem took some ice tea instead of wine to be sure we would had a sufficient contrast to see some liquid in the glas. Because he got the award of the best sommelier of Slovenia last summer we decided to make a picture related to his professional activity. At the end I am still quite surprised by the final result.
The picture was taken right before sunrise at a distance of about 700 m.
Nice one Kev, great atmosphere
Yes, this was planned with TPE. This is my first ever planned MW shot. We went two hours north of Charlotte to an AirBnB near the tiny town of Independence VA to find dark skies. It remained cloudy and I had almost given up but it finally cleared. My plan was for a lower arc over the hills around midnight. This was shot just before 2am. Look close for the fireflies too. 13 images stitched in LR. The silo was our bedroom.
