Sun's Path isn't drawn Completely in PhotoRealistic view

Just updgraded from Pro to Max and I noticed that when using the Highest detail, the path of the Sun isn’t completely shown. This is a view of downtown Cleveland, Oh from Upper Edgewater park. I’m using an M5 Pro MacBook Pro with 48gb. Just checked the other resolutions and even went back to terrain view and the complete path of the sun is only partially shown. A few weeks ago when still on the Pro Account the complete path was always shown in Terrain view?

Hi Ron,

Could you send me a link for this view so I can load and compare? Share button is located very bottom right of the window and you can copy a link from there. If you’d rather not post it publicly, please email support@photoephemeris.com.

In the meantime, I’ll see if I can reproduce it based on your screenshot.

Thanks,

Stephen

PS. Thanks for upgrading!

@ronskinner4435 – question: if you turn Photorealistic off (i.e. use the Terrain option), does the path appear complete for you?

I’ve tried Photo realistic in all resolutions and also went back to terrain mode and even there the path isn’t complete. Back when I was using pro the Sun path was complete in Terrain mode. I tried exiting the program and getting back in and have the same issue, also quit Safari and retried and never get the complete Sun path. I also tried a different location and there were gaps in the sun path

Could you try adjusting the focal length, moving the camera orientation and position around, and changing the size from 8x to other values (drop down at the top right of the view), and report what you see, especially if you notice any changes in the appearance of the broken segment?

(I don’t think this is likely related to PRO vs MAX per se.)

Ok the problem seems to occur every time the Sun Path line is redrawn, it happens in both photorealistic and terrain view. It happens at various focal lengths and magnification settings. When I move the view by panning it redraws the Sun Path and the gaps in the line move, sometimes I get a complete line. When I change the dates and it redraws the Sun Path I get gaps. It’s probably not a Pro vs Max issue but something that changed in the latest version. In the previous version I was using terrain view and the Sun and Moon paths were always complete. I also tried a total different location with the sun setting over the Lorain Ohio Lighthouse and got the same incomplete Sun Path

Thanks Ron - that’s super helpful. I’m travelling back to the US from Europe this weekend so it may take me until midweek to get back onto this, but I’ll do my best to investigate further with the clues you’ve provided.

Hi again Ron – sorry to keep asking for more info here, but could you do two things:

  1. Send some links for the shot plans you have above so i can reproduce precisely (use the Share form shown in the screenshot below to get the links, or export saved shot plans as .tpe file)
  2. Test in Chrome instead of Safari and see if you see the same problem
  3. Confirm exactly which version of Safari you’re using?

Thanks so much – this will be invaluable for further debugging.

Stephen

Safari version is the latest 26.5.2 Didn’t test in Chrome, I don’t want to install it on my Macbook

Thanks Ron. There’s a bug fix release up on beta.photoephemeris, com, version 4.5.3. Could you give it a try out when you can and let me know what you see?

I was able to reproduce the problem from the link you provided and have made some changes in the path rendering to try to avoid the issue.

Great just tried the beta and now the sun path is complete, one thing I did notice is sun will show up with white spots (sun spots LOL). Also in the Lighthouse photos below, I noticed if I change from 1x to 8x the sun stays the same size but the sun path line gets thicker. Thanks for fixing the Sun Path.

Thanks for confirming, Ron.

In first-person mode, the 1x vs 2/4/8x behaviour is deliberate: FPV mode is used for “real-world” composition planning so it would be potentially disastrously misleading to show the Sun and Moon at anything other than their actual “as seen” sizes. The tracks can be drawn thicker though, and markers for stars/DSOs etc can be scaled up for easier legibility.

Oh ok, that makes sense I noticed the those modes work in the Globe view. In FPV I guess it’s better to keep it it 8x view even though the Sun or Moon are always at actual size, since the Sun path is shown a little bolder when set to 8x
