I’m very curious - when would it be safe to shoot a partial phase without the filter? I’m shooting from Mallorca in a few days and the sun at totality will be at 2 degrees above horizon only. I’m assuming the atmosphere density would be sufficient to continue shooting without the filter from then on, but I’d appreciate any input from somebody more experienced 
Hi Rosie – it’s not something I suspect many folks have tried or would want to be giving public advice about. At 2-degrees over moist, hazy sea air, you have about a 6-stop advantage vs the overhead sun, though, and with a high obscuration of the Sun’s disk near totality, there’s likely some latitude for shooting brief unfiltered sequences. I certainly wouldn’t leave a mirrorless camera pointed at the sun without a lens cap on for more than a few seconds at most though, personally speaking.
No camera manufacturers give any data or guidance on this as best I know, so better safe than sorry, I suspect. Hope Mallorca is fun!
