TPE Web 4.7 Beta

The first TPE Web 4.7 beta is now available. This adds calendar integration for Shot Plans, making it easier to turn your planning library into an actual shooting schedule.

Add Shot Plans to your calendar

Saved Shot Plans now have an Add to calendar option, with support for:

  • Calendar files (.ics), compatible with Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, Outlook and other calendar apps
  • Google Calendar
  • Outlook.com

Calendar events include the plan’s date and time, location, notes and reference links, plus useful planning context such as the nearest event from the TPE timeline.

They also include an Open in TPE link that takes you directly back to the saved plan on the page where you created it.

Calendar times are stored as exact instants, so they’ll display correctly if your calendar is currently showing a different time zone from the location of the shoot.

Add reminders to Shot Plans

Shot Plans can now have up to 10 reminders, which are saved and synchronized as part of the plan.

Choose from common intervals such as a week, a day or 15 minutes before the planned time, or specify your own reminder interval.

When you export a plan as an .ics calendar file, those reminders are included as calendar alerts. The alternative Add to Google and Add to Outlook links do not support reminders (a limitation of those sites that we cannot work around).

If you haven’t configured any reminders, TPE adds a default alert one hour before the shoot, so an imported event doesn’t silently arrive in your calendar with no reminder at all.

Export your shooting schedule

You can also export multiple Shot Plans into a single calendar file.

Calendar export is available from:

  • Shot Plans
  • Upcoming
  • All Items
  • Lists containing Shot Plans

The Upcoming view is particularly useful here: export it and you effectively have your upcoming TPE shooting schedule ready to import into your calendar.

Only plans with a date and time are included.

Add the current view without saving a Shot Plan

Sometimes you just want to put something on your calendar without adding it permanently to your TPE Library.

The Share dialog on the Map, 3D, Moon and Eclipse pages now includes an Add to Calendar option.

This creates a calendar event directly from the date, time and location you’re currently viewing, without requiring you to save a Shot Plan first.

Right-click Shot Plan tabs

Shot Plan tabs now have a context menu providing quick access to common actions, including:

  • Edit
  • Save or discard changes
  • View in Library
  • Add to calendar
  • Close

If the plan has unsaved changes, Add to Calendar makes it clear that the saved version of the plan is what will be exported.

Other fixes

This beta also includes a handful of reliability and usability fixes:

  • Fixed a rare crash when initializing Photorealistic mode in the 3D view after a tile-loading failure.
  • Malformed date parameters in shared or manually edited URLs can no longer prevent TPE from starting.
  • Help suggestions now display category names containing special characters correctly.

Add to Calendar is available to all users and does not require a subscription.

For beta testing, I’d particularly appreciate reports on calendar behavior across different combinations of Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, Outlook and other calendar apps, including event times, reminders and what happens when you export an updated version of the same Shot Plan.

There’ll be further additions to 4.7 before final release, so watch this space…

Just tried Add to Calendar and it works fine with Apple Calendar and from the Calendar I was able to open the Shot Plan in TPE

Recently you added the ability to create a JPG of the First Person View, I think it would be great if this was also added to the Map and Global views too. Right now I have to take a screenshot in Map and Global views.

Good suggestion – it hadn’t occurred to me that this would be useful, but I can see why it would make sense. I’ll have to test it out to see what’s doable, as the rendering of the map is rather different from the rendering of the 3D scene.

Ok - completely new to TPE this week / how do I get the latest update / still on 4.6 and excited to dive into 4.7 and start packing my calendar!

I set up Photo Shoots in my FB photography group, mostly for the Full Moon Rising over Cleveland and in the post I like to include a Map view, a Global View and the First Person view of the shooting location. Today for example the Blue Angels are in town for the Cleveland Air Show, on Friday they do a practice run but the weather isn’t cooperating today so I had to take a Screenshot of the Map with the weather overlay to show the current conditions, unfortunately screenshots don’t show your Planned with TPE logo

TPE Web 4.7 Beta Update 2

A second TPE Web 4.7 beta build is now available. This drop includes several improvements to solar eclipse planning, plus some smaller fixes to time anchors and the Moon illumination display.

New eclipse markers

When an eclipse path is displayed, TPE can now show several additional significant points on the global map:

  • Maximum diameter ratio, where the Moon appears largest relative to the Sun along the central path. This is not necessarily the same location as greatest eclipse.

  • Annular to total transition and Total to annular transition, for hybrid eclipses, sometimes also known as “Willcox Points” (informal name). The hybrid solar eclipse of Nov 14 2031 is the such eclipse that illustrates these.

  • Maximum partial eclipse, for eclipses that are partial everywhere.

Click a marker to see its location and time, together with the eclipse magnitude, Moon/Sun diameter ratio and Sun altitude.

These calculations use new eclipse functionality in the underlying astronomical library and have been validated against our existing hybrid-eclipse test data.

Moon/Sun diameter ratio

The eclipse chart legend now shows the apparent Moon/Sun diameter ratio (A) alongside the existing linear eclipse magnitude (G).

This is useful for understanding how the apparent sizes of the two discs vary along an eclipse path. Tooltips in the legend explain the distinction between the two measurements.

The diameter ratio is also now included in eclipse data JSON exports.

More consistent eclipse calculations over the ocean

I’ve fixed an inconsistency that could affect eclipse calculations at locations over the ocean.

TPE normally treats the ocean surface as sea level for planning purposes, but some parts of the eclipse simulator were inadvertently using the underlying seabed elevation instead. This could produce small disagreements between the eclipse chart, legend, timeline and simulator.

All eclipse calculations now use the same observer height, consistent with the elevation shown in TPE and including your configured camera height above ground.

If you deliberately disable the sea-level lock, below-sea-level observer positions continue to be supported.

Time and eclipse display fixes

  • Timeline event labels are now more accurate around very short totalities and hybrid transitions. If the time cursor is anchored to maximum eclipse, for example, it will no longer incorrectly identify a nearby contact instead.

  • Unresolved time anchors are now much clearer. If an anchor cannot occur at the current location, its label is struck through and displays a warning indicator.

  • Moon illumination during totality now displays correctly as 0% instead of occasionally showing NaN%.

For beta testing, feedback on the new eclipse markers is particularly welcome, especially for hybrid eclipses and locations over the ocean.
