Where are you going to see the April 8th eclipse?

I live outside of Bastrop but will be heading to Kerrville, TX for a better view!

Kerrville, TX. Clear skies to all!

Headed for southeastern Oklahoma. Hoping for clear skies.

Some good potential for Baily’s Beads at C3 in Montréal, clear skies allowing! Plus the Sun is a bit lower in the sky, which makes for more comfortable observing/shooting.

What did you use for a simulator? Link?

First, thank you Stephen for putting this all together. Second, I live in central Indiana so I will be shooting locally -or chasing clear skies depending on the forecast. This is my first attempt at doing this and my equipment is not ideal (so far I have a Canon 5D Mark III with either a 70-200 f/2.8 and 2x extender to work with or a Tamron 400mm f/5.6), but I’m excited to try. I’m also looking for other photographers in the area who might not mind someone setting up nearby and sharing the experience. It would be more fun I think.

It’s all built into TPE (web and iOS). More info here: https://support.photoephemeris.com/hc/en-us/articles/15934294519828-Solar-Eclipse-Planning

Hi Jill - thanks for joining! I would think you could get some great shots with that setup. I shot the 2017 eclipse with D800 and a 70-300mm and was pretty happy with the results.

What other camera/lens setups are folks planning on using?

That is so cool!! Amazeballs! Thanks!

Comparison of your model to my composite at C3 for the Annular in October. Damn nice!

Nice sequence Rick! I did a bunch more comparisons on the simulator performance here: https://support.photoephemeris.com/hc/en-us/articles/20929779387796-Verification-of-Baily-s-Beads-Simulation

Very cool! Thanks for doing this!

I shot the 2017 eclipse with a Canon 5DsR and EF 100-400 II L with 1.4 tele extender, and got great results. I plan on using the same lenses with an R5 this year. I also plan on mounting this on a Star Adventurer 2i star tracker, to maintain a constant track on the sun (to eliminate constant repositioning), and may do a timelapse with that. I may also use an R5 with the RF 800 mm f/11 for a little closer shots, especially for Baileys Beads. but just with manual framing.

I’m going on a longer roadtrip to the US (I’m from Switzerland) this summer and I specifically planned my flights so I could see (and photograph) the eclipse. Unfortunately I won’t make it closer to the path of totality than Las Vegas, so I’m planning to be in Valley of Fire State Park for it, which gets about 50% coverage.
This will be my first eclipse I’m trying to photograph and my plan is to take a wide-angle timelapse with a 20mm lens and a closeup with a 100-400mm lens and a star tracker (hopefully rough polar alignment will be sufficient).

One thing I’m not really sure is whether or not I’ll need a proper solar filter for the wide-angle lens? Obviously the tele will need one (I’m getting a Hoya Pro ND100000 for that), but is the wide-angle also at risk if I take a 2h timelapse?
The wide-angle will be on a DSLR not a mirrorless, if that makes a difference.

We’ll be in Mazatlán as well…still debating the equipment side.

I’ll be south of Durango, Mexico (going aaaalllll the way from Eastern Europe)! Found a neat national park and will shoot with two cameras - Sony A7RIII + Sony 200-600 for the corona, and a separate Sony A7III + Sony 24-105 for a wider shot with foreground. It’ll be my very first total eclipse, hope I don’t get too overwhelmed with settings

I live just outside Chicago and have 3 places reserved, one in Buffalo NY one in Dallas and one which is preferred near Carbondale IL where I shot the eclipse in 2017. Good luck to all!

Welcome Rick, Rosie, Richard! Great to hear about your plans.

I’m still debating gear - do I add a 1.4x teleconverter to the 100-400mm I’m already planning on bringing. It’s tempting, but my last try out with one on a 200-500mm with a solar filter made focus impossible.

I think the newer Nikon Z lenses may perform better though.
